Publishing While Black

As part of the Black Studies Symposium, the Black Studies Program hosted a talk with Dr. Alisha Knight entitled “Publishing While Black.” Dr. Knight is a Professor of English at Washington College and the former director of the Black Studies program. In her presentation, Dr. Knight recounted the history of the roles of Black Americans in the publishing industry. She talked about figures such as Ida B. Wells and how her anti-lynching journalistic writings were published. Knight’s presentation also looked over the history of several publications such as The Colored American Magazine. The event illuminated the history and current circumstances of Black people in publishing and provided very important context and information just as each installment of the Black Studies Symposium so far has.
