Writing While Black

In the last installment of Washington College’s Black Studies Symposium, Professor Sufiya Abdur-Rahman gave a talk entitled “Writing While Black.” The talk, which took place the evening of April 22nd, emphasized the importance for Black people to be able to tell their own stories.  The event also allowed for a preview of Professor Abdur-Rahman’s forthcoming memoir, Heir to the Crescent Moon. Abdur-Rahman incorporated photos from her life throughout the presentation as she read excerpts from her book. She followed the reading by recounting different stories from multiple generations, incorporating some aspects of the section she read about memories with her mother and grandmother. The talk was followed with questions from Dr. Alisha Knight.
