Convocation Week
At the beginning of the week of February 22nd to the 26th, the interim president at Washington College Doctor, Wayne Powell, opened convocation week with a statement on the unprecedented situation the world finds itself in. As a result, the ceremony would be presented in a series of videos once a day, announcing an award every day and honoring the individuals who would normally be on stage. SGA president Elizabeth Lilly also thanks and honors her fellow classmates for their accomplishments and efforts to continue clubs and activities as well as pursue the college’s diversity and equity statement.
Dr. Alisha Knight was honored with the Innovation in Teaching award for creating several new courses in African American Literature. The Joseph L. Holt Distinguished Service award was granted to the director of Health Services Lisa Marx, the director of the Cromwell Center for Teaching and Learning Katherine Maynard, and the director of the and Valerie L.V. Stewart, the Associate Director, Institutional and Government Giving. The award was given to Marx for her excellence and dedication to COVID health concerns, to Maynard for going above and beyond in her duties in the provost office and for Stewart for her fundraising efforts netting the college $15 million last year. The President’s Medal was awarded to Bayside HOYAS inc., an organization built to connect and inspire the youth with the college and adult world, and Clinton Daly whose constant contributions to Washington College and the environment have made a great impact. Ann Dorsey Horner and John-Bruce Alexander were awarded the Alumni Service award for Horner’s tireless support of alumni engagement and career development programs and for Alexander’s work in the dean’s office immediately after graduating and his frequent contribution as a representative in career fairs.
