Alexandra Zelin Lecture
The Washington College Psychology Department hosted a Zoom call on Monday, March 22nd featuring Alexandra Zelin. Zelin is the assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the University Of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Akron. Zelin aided her lecture with a vibrant and colorful powerpoint titled “Women at Work: Sexual Harassment, Bias, and the Importance of Recognizing the Intersection of Social Identities.” In her presentation, she defined people as more than just their age, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation but rather as a portfolio of all categories. Zelin examined concepts such as social stratification, the matrix of domination, and privilege aided with tables and comparisons as well as the methods of her research. Zelin’s research focused on dating app Tinder and the discriminatory or objectifying opening lines women receive from men, and the disproportionate sexual harassment minority groups face in work environments. Zelin was focused, friendly, and offered insight into parts of harassment and discrimination faced based on the diversity of the individual.
