#BlackWomenLead Congress: The Difference They Make and the Road They Took to Get There

On Wednesday, March 17th, The Goldstein Program hosted a webinar with Kimberly Peeler-Allen giving a talk titled #BlackWomenLead Congress: The Difference They Make and the Road They Took to Get There. Peeler-Allen is the Co-Founder of Higher Heights, an advocacy group that aims to increase the involvement of Black women in politics. Peeler-Allen started with a presentation on Black women in United States history such as those involved in the suffrage movement. The presentation also acknowledged the growth of Black women in candidate roles as well as in voting. A large piece of the conversation centered around the unwillingness of gatekeepers and brokers to back the campaigns of Black women, limiting the possibility of their success in getting to Congress. Commenting on the numerous merits of giving more Black women political platforms, Peeler-Allen said, “When there are more voices involved in decision making conversations, better decisions are made.”
