Ruling While Black: Black Monarchs in Colonial Latin America

For the second installment of the Black symposium, Professor Deanda welcomed Dr. Valerio and Erin Rowe to present Ruling While Black: Black Monarchs in Colonial Latin America. Miguel Valerio received his doctorate from Ohio State and is currently a Professor at Washington University. Erin Rowe is a Washington College Alumna who is currently an Associate Professor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies at Johns Hopkins University. They presented on Black sovereignty and what it meant to be to be Black and joyful during the height of slavery. Dr. Valerio also discussed confraria which served as sovereign places with several social and cultural functions. After the discussion, students and members of the college asked several thoughtful questions. We thank Dr. Valerio and Erin Rowe for coming to speak to us.
