African American Read-in

On February 24th, the Kent County Library hosted a virtual African American Read-in, co-sponsored by Washington College's Department of Education & Black Studies Program. Twelve volunteers read work that was important to them and said a bit about why they chose the pieces that they did. The Read-in featured a range of work from the poetry of Audre Lorde to children’s books like Freedom in Congo Square by Carole Boston Weatherford and R. Gregory Christie. For those in attendance, African American book bundles with a free tote bag were available to be reserved. The Black Studies Program included free books for each tote bag, and the CV Starr Center included information about the Chesapeake Heartland Project, a project working toward digitizing materials related to the African American history of Kent County to make them accessible to everyone. The audience for this event included college faculty, staff, and students, library staff, Sumner Hall volunteers, and many members of the Kent County community.
