“Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World:” A Talk and Signing with Wil Haygood

Haygood delivered a few remarks at the beginning of the event, before Dr. Nugent played the video trailer advertising the book’s release. 

Community members and students alike took advantage of this opportunity to get ahold of Haygood’s work.

 

Journalist and biographer Wil Haygood delivered brief remarks on his new book, “Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World,” before sitting down for a conversation with Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience Thomas V. Mike Miller Director of Civic Engagement Dr. Patrick Nugent on Wednesday, March 8th in Litrenta Lecture Hall at 7 p.m. Haygood is the author of several best-selling books, namely “Showdown,” “In Black and White,” and “The Butler.” He is a Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow and is working as a Boadway Visiting Distinguished Scholar at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He was the Starr Center’s Patrick Henry Writing Fellow in 2017. Dr. Nugent and Haygood discussed the role and influence of “The Birth of a Nation,” director Oscar Micheaux, actress Hattie McDaniel, actor Sidney Poitier, and the Blaxploitation era. The conversation was followed by a book signing and a dinner held in Hynson Hall. 

WC’s bookstore was selling copies of Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World. Haygood was available to sign them. 

Dr. Nugent facilitated a conversation with Haygood, which was followed by a question-and-answer session.
