Sumner House African American Read-In

February 19, 2019

On February 19, 2019 Washington College hosted their annual African American Read-In to celebrate Black History Month. This annual event was formed in 1990 by the Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English and has traditionally been held on campus at Washington College. However, this year in order to make the event more available to the Chestertown community as a whole, it was held in the off campus Sumner house. People were able to choose a book written by an African American author and share why they enjoyed it.

Kayla Merthens, a junior at Washington college said, “It’s been so nice to hear all these stories.  Some of them like the Patchwork Quilt were very nostalgic. I hope we have more events like this.”
