SEB Netflix & Chill Teleparty
On Thursday, February 11th, Students grabbed their popcorn and joined their peers for a movie in the only way they could – online. One of the Student Events Board (SEB) latest plans to provide entertainment in a fun and engaging way for their fellow WAC members was a movie night for Valentine’s Day. Jacklyn Russo, the Director of Special Events for the SEB, stated that the board has been wanting to host an event for the holiday. Russo said, “We had wanted to do a movie night for Valentine's Day and considering the circumstances we figured Teleparty would be the best way to do so!” Using the easy-to-install chrome extension, Netflix Teleparty, the team found ways around the dangers of physical meetups. As long as a student or their roommates had a Netflix account, and who doesn’t nowadays, the Teleparty extension allowed them to join the same movie as all the other attendees as if Netflix was being live streamed. The movie selected was a classic rom-com, “50 First Dates” starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Adam Sandler falls in love with a girl who forgets everything about her day the next morning, a movie selected most likely for its genre during the holiday of romance.
Russo stated “We definitely had a lower attendance than we had hoped for but in our opinion the event went as well as it could be!” Overall, Russo seemed to consider the experience a success nonetheless and remained hopeful for the future. Russo expressed the team’s desire to provide the students with a more real experience, adding “We will for sure be doing another movie night in the future, with hopes it can be socially distanced on campus! However, if that does not go as planned, we will definitely use Teleparty again.”
