As part of the virtual Literary House Series, the Rose O’Neill Literary House co-sponsored a reading by English non-fiction writer Robert Macfarlane with the Center for the Environment and Society, Writers’ Union, William James Forum, and Phi Beta Kappa. The reading, which featured excerpts from a few of his award-winning books, occurred at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3rd. Owner of The Ivy Bookshop and Bird in Hand, both located in Baltimore, Md, Emma Snyder helped to facilitate a conversation with Macfarlane about his books. Most of Macfarlane’s books explore themes of environmentalism, literature, and travel. His most recent book “The Lost Words,” which won the 2017 Children’s Book of the Year Award, was co-created with artist Jackie Morris and re-introduces 20 nature-related words that were removed from the Oxford Dictionary into the minds of children. Macfarlane believes that now more than ever a connection to nature is vital. “We live in an accelerated geological age when... creative weaves that have been millions of years in the making are being broken and ruptured. Things that should have stayed hidden are rising to the surface,” he said.
