Art historian, curator, writer, and Washington College graduate alumni Madi Shenk ‘19 gave a virtual guest lecture on Wednesday, February 8th. Presented by the Art and Art History Department, the lecture was organized in collaboration with Associate Professor of Studio Art Julie Wills. Professor Wills, who is teaching a class focusing on collage creation, introduced Shenk before the talk began. Shenk then presented a “whirlwind tour” of the history of 20th and 21st-century collage. She also discussed her own research, which concerns the intersection of queer theory and disability studies. Currently, a graduate student studying art history, collage, and photomontage at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, Shenk researches contemporary artists who investigate questions related to identity, gender, race, and ability in their work.
Mady Shenk ’19 examined the images she shared from a sociohistorical, as well as artistic, perspective.
