The crowd watches the movie.
As part of a screenwriting series, the English department brought director Whit Stillman to Washington College. The event was hosted by English professor Dr. Katherine Charles in the Norman James theater. The movie was about a widow, Lady Susan, who tried to find a partner for herself and her daughter. The movie was based on Jane Austen’s short story under the same name as the character and had a wonderful soundtrack with many comedic undertones. WC students enjoyed getting to ask Stillman their questions. In one answer, Stillman said he did not care for Austen’s other novel, “Northanger Abbey.” While the previous was more famous than “Lady Susan,” he thought the reason why was because the short story was in the epistolary form. He then explained that by making it into a movie, he made it more accessible. According to Dr. Katherine Charles, he would be more than happy to come back to WC.
