Public Lecture on Contemporary Cuban Art
October 19, 2023
Mariño starts the lecture.
Mariño discusses art and activism.
To share her love for art and its connection to activism, María de Loudres Mariño came to Washington College to explain in a lecture the similarities it has to Cuban history. At 6:00 p.m. in the Norman James Theater, she talked about several artists and their impact on Cuban history. One of these artists was Tarnia Bruguera, who was an artist that discussed history and immigrant rights. Bruguera had one art piece with meat around her body as she ate soil mixed with salt and water. Mariño explained that this was symbolism for cultural suicide. She also mentioned how Bruguera specifically spoke out against gender and racial violence. At the end, the discussion was left up to questions.
Mariño talks about Tania Bruguera.
