Guy F Goodfellow Memorial Lecture Series - Thomas Jefferson

The Guy F. Goodfellow Memorial Lecture Series annually invites a distinguished speaker to campus. On March 2nd, the chair of the History Department, Professor Janet Sorrentino, and Professor Ken Miller welcomed Alan Taylor to speak for this year’s Guy F. Goodfellow Memorial Lecture. Dr. Taylor is the only person to be invited twice to speak as a Goodfellow. For this years presentation, he spoke about Thomas Jefferson's Education: Youth, Honor, Slavery, and Violence.  He spoke of Jefferson’s motives, plans, and execution of creating the University of Virginia and a southern curriculum. Further questions from the audience prompted him to speak about Jefferson’s opinion on liberty and slavery and also how Jefferson is still connected to the University of Virginia today.  We thank Dr. Taylor for his thoughtful, educational, and entertaining presentation.
