Visiting Assistant Professor of English Sufiya Abdur-Rahman’s first memoir, “Heir to the Crescent Moon,” was recently published and to celebrate The Sophie Kerr series presented a reception and reading co-sponsored by the Rose O’Neill Literary House and the Starr Center for the Study of American History on Wednesday, November 17th. The reception was located on the Rose O’Neill Literary House terrace at 4:00 p.m., and the reading was conducted virtually at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom, although many faculty and student members of the English department chose to watch the event together on the big screen in the Hodson Egg.  Director of the Rose O’Neill Literary House and Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing Dr. James Hall served as interlocutor for the event, encouraging Abdur-Rahman to read the prologue of her book, “My Father,” a section that discusses her father’s introduction to Islam and activism, as well as her mother’s introduction to Civil Rights activism.

Attendees of the reception gather together for a group photo in support of Prof. Abdur-Rahman and her newly published memoir.
