English SCE Lightning Talks
April 26th, 2023
Noah Newsome compares the life and work of Mary Rowlandson and Frederick Douglass.
Emma Russell examines female desire in texts such as Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and the Bridgerton book series, and their popularity with female audiences.
Patricia Tiu compares depictions of the character Circe in texts such as Homer’s The Odyssey, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and Madeline Miller’s Circe.
As the final piece of their Senior Capstone Experiences, senior English majors gathered in the Rose O’Neill Literary House on April 26th to present their projects. This was the first in-person SCE Lightning Talk inside the Lit House since the pandemic. The Senior Capstone Experience for English requires that students complete a 25-30 page thesis on a topic and text of their choosing that demonstrates their research and analytical skills related to the field of English. Each student was given 2-3 minutes to summarize their SCEs, with theses covering a broad array of topics, texts, and arguments, from Charlotte Temple to The Catcher in the Rye. Some students utilized visual aids to illustrate their subjects, such as PowerPoint slides, while others stuck to oral presentations. This event allowed seniors, and the rest of the college community, to see and celebrate their peers’ hard work over the past two years, and see how each of their arguments may intersect.
Emma Reilly analyzes the limits of consent and authority in Charlotte Temple by Susanna Rowson.
AJ Gerardi summarizes his project related to the meaning of flight in Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison.
