Día de los Muertos

November 1st, 2022

Members of the campus and Chestertown community gathered in The Egg in the spirit of togetherness to honor the dead.

The Washington College Hispanic Studies Choir, composed of HPS 301 students and led by Associate Professor of Spanish Dr. Elena Deanda.

To celebrate Day of the Dead, the Washington College World Languages and Cultures department put together a Día de los Muertos Celebration in The Egg on November 1st. The event was complete with food, music, face painting, and an altar dedicated to loved ones who have passed away. Before the festivities began, students helped put together the altar and decorated it with skulls and candles. Guests were encouraged to bring photos of those who have passed, and place them at the altar to decorate it, and honor them. They could also enjoy Pan de Muerto, either sweet or sesame, tamales, and hot chocolate as they gathered with others. If one so desired, they could get their face painted by guest artist Dayesla Ixtli. Later into the event, guests could stay and listen to Freddy Granillo and Sergio Cilla perform live, as well as Washington College’s Hispanic Studies Choir. While Día de los Muertos is to honor the dead, it is also a celebration of life and personal connections.

Delicious tamales, bread, and hot chocolate for guests to enjoy!
