The Black Student Union hosted a Poetry Slam event on October 6th, 2022. Here, both Black students and allies gathered together in the Tawes Theater to spread awareness about mental health. As the Black Student Union social media page pointed out, “Sixteen percent (4.8 million) of Black and African American people reported having a mental illness, and 22.4 percent of those (1.1 million people) reported a serious mental illness over the past year.” With these statistics, it is vital that one uplifts Black voices and continues to form a community. This made Black Student Union hosting this event vital to their community. Students were able to read letters, original poetry, or poetry of someone they admire. It was an incredibly uplifting event and one can hope to attend again next year.
