With the support of the William James Forum Fund and Washington College’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the Department of Environmental Science and Studies and the Center for Environment and Society welcomed Arctic Climatologist and Glaciologist Dr. Jason Box to Chestertown. Dr. Box is featured in two films that CES screened on campus earlier in the semester: Into the Ice (2022) and Before the Flood (2016). After being introduced by the Director of CES Dr. Valerie Imbruce, he delivered a lecture titled “Arctic Climate and Greenland Ice: Global Connections” on Tuesday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m. to an audience of faculty, students, staff, and locals. Gathered in the Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince Theatre, audience members listened to Dr. Box discuss his professional trajectory, analyze the current state of the climate crisis, and explain why current climate projection models are inaccurate. After the lecture, Dr. Box moderated a brief question-and-answer session, which was followed by a wine and cheese reception. Guests were able to mingle with each other and Dr. Box in the theater before the night’s end.
Dr. Box was introduced by the Director of CES Dr. Valerie Imbruce, who celebrated the fact that the event constituted her first opportunity to introduce a guest since taking on her new position at WC.
