On September 29th, Washington College welcomed Washington Post Magazine writer Damon Young to campus for a reading from his book, What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker, and a Q&A hosted by Professor Sufiya Abdur-Rahman. This was the English Department’s first literary talk of the year in partnership with the Sophie Kerr Lecture Series and Harwood Lecture Series, and since February 2020. Damon Young is a prolific journalist for Washington Post Magazine, specializing in opinion pieces, advice columns, and above all, humor. What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker, published in 2019, is a collection of essays and memoirs from Young’s life. He discussed overcoming adversity, both within himself and from external responses to his work, cultivating his love for writing, and “finding the funny” in sometimes difficult topics.

Damon Young answers questions from the audience.
